Selection in males purges the mutation load on female fitness

چکیده
Abstract Theory predicts that the ability of selection and recombination to purge mutation load is enhanced if against deleterious genetic variants operates more strongly in males than females. However, direct empirical support for this tenet limited, part because traditional quantitative approaches allow dominance intermediate-frequency polymorphisms obscure effects many rare partially recessive alleles make up main a population's load. Here, we exposed population Callosobruchus maculatus seed beetles via successive generations inbreeding, quantified its by measuring heterosis—the increase fitness experienced when masking heterozygosity—in fully factorial sex-specific diallel cross among 16 inbred strains. Competitive lifetime reproductive success (i.e., fitness) was measured male female outcrossed F1s as well parental “selfs,” estimated 4 × male-female inbred-outbred covariance matrix using Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations custom-made general linear mixed model. We found heterosis independently females highly genetically correlated strains, negatively outbred male, but not female, fitness. This suggests variation males, females, reflects amount (partially) segregating at mutation-selection balance population. The therefore has greater potential be purged males. These findings contribute our understanding prevalence sexual reproduction nature maintenance fitness-related traits.

Strong sexual selection in males against a mutation load that reduces offspring production in seed beetles.
Theory predicts that sexual reproduction can increase population viability relative to asexual reproduction by allowing sexual selection in males to remove deleterious mutations from the population without large demographic costs. This requires that selection acts more strongly in males than females and that mutations affecting male reproductive success have pleiotropic effects on population pr...

Under the traditional mutation load model based on multiplicative fitness effects, the load in a population is 1-e-U , where U is the genomic deleterious mutation rate. Because this load becomes high under large U, synergistic epistasis has been proposed as one possible means of reducing the load. However, experiments on model organisms attempting to detect synergistic epistasis have often focu...

Gonadal failure, along with early pregnancy loss and perinatal death, may be an important filter that limits the propagation of harmful mutations in the human population. We hypothesized that men with spermatogenic impairment, a disease with unknown genetic architecture and a common cause of male infertility, are enriched for rare deleterious mutations compared to men with normal spermatogenesi...
